Rollators

Rollators, also known as rolling walkers, are medical mobility devices which are basically sturdy walker frames with three or four large wheels that often include hand-brakes, handlebars, a fold-down seat for resting during walks, and a basket for carrying items. Utilized by individuals with walking challenges, rollators are easy to use because it’s like pushing a cart, and they’re lightweight and simpler to maneuver outside on flat and uneven ground surfaces to promote mobility independence for the user.

What is a Rollator?

Similar to a walker, a rollator enables individuals who have physical walking challenges and disabilities to be able to safely get around and move more freely in various indoor and outdoor environments. These lightweight wheeled walkers feature three or four large wheels, handlebars of various design and can often include a seat for resting. They typically include hand brakes, and adjustability options for ergonomic height control. Other highlights can include shopping baskets or pouches for ease of carrying personal items or purchases.

The larger wheels on a rollator make it easier to maneuver, especially on uneven surfaces, such as outdoors. Three-wheeled rollators offer the tightest turning radius, while the front wheels on most rollators also swivel easily so that the user doesn’t have to pick it up to turn it left or right as is required with a walker. A seat can be included on four-wheeled rollators, a handy feature for users who may get tired easily.

Most rollators also highlight higher weight capacity handling than walkers, while there are also numerous bariatric styles available as well.

How to Choose a Rollator

There are several factors to consider before deciding upon the best rollator for your own specific purposes and lifestyle. One of the most important considerations is determining whether you require a seat or not. If you do require a seat, you will need to choose a four-wheeled rollator style. If you do not require a seat, but need the tightest turning radius available, then a three-wheeled design will be better for you. Three-wheeled rollators are lighter in weight, but four-wheeled designs provide more stability.

If you are choosing a four-wheeled design with a seat, you may want to choose a rollator that comes with adjustable seat height capabilities. Look for a padded and/or contoured seat, as these can be much more comfortable than hard plastic. Also, be sure to check out the weight capacity and seat dimensions to ensure that the rollator you choose will safely and comfortably support your weight and size.

Rollators with three wheels tend to be narrower, which may make ambulating around the house easier. Three-wheeled rollators can sometimes be partially collapsed to maneuver through tight spaces like most standard doorways inside of a home. Width is an important factor to consider when choosing your rollator. If you are using it mostly in-home, then a three-wheeled design may be your best choice, as four-wheeled designs are generally wider in construction.

Height adjustment capabilities while operating the rollator are extremely crucial to ensure the right fit, especially for individuals who are shorter or taller than average. Ergonomic considerations include measurement from the floor to the hands, with elbows slightly bent, to determine the correct rollator handle height for each user. If a shorter user is reaching up too high, or a taller user is bending too low, both situations could cause more physical health issues and pain.

Both three-wheeled and four-wheeled rollators are heavier to lift than traditional walkers, and this aspect must be part of the process when deciding what rollator to purchase. Three wheel rollators typically weigh around 9-14 pounds, while four-wheel designs come in at around 16-26 pounds. If the rollator will need to be transported in a vehicle, either the user or the caregiver must be able to lift it in and out. As mentioned, some models also feature easy foldability, making them much easier to transport.

While most rollators feature larger wheels than other mobility devices, wheel sizes do vary on different models. The larger the wheels, the better the rollator will perform outdoors or on other uneven surfaces. Smaller wheels offer better maneuverability on tightly-woven carpets and hardwood floors.

Many rollator designs include baskets, bags and collapsible pouches to provide easy carrying capabilities.

The Benefits of a Rollator

While there a number of reasons people use rollators, the most usual one is the need for a mobility aid that offers more flexibility and maneuverability than a walker, but more security and support than a cane. Rollators can bring a new level of activity and movement to individuals, resulting in increased independence and social interaction. If an individual cannot lift a walker, needs something more durable than a walker, would like to ambulate more quickly, needs support to ease back issues or back pain, or needs to sit often, a rollator is a perfect mobility solution.
