Splinting Thermoplastics

A thermoplastic splint is a device used to immobilize, protect and support injuries such as fractures, sprains and strains. Thermoplastic splints differ from traditional plaster casts in that they are lighter, easily molded to fit the body of the individual patient and can be removed for cleaning and patient bathing.

A thermoplastic splint can also be used to stabilize an injury prior to surgery as well as to provide fast immobilization to areas of trauma in emergency rooms. The two basic types of thermoplastic splints are made from low temperature thermoplastic materials and high temperature thermoplastic materials. Low temperature thermoplastic splints can be softened in hot water and placed directly on the skin and are most appropriate for upper limb fractures or injuries. High temperature thermoplastic splints are made from a cast and require higher temperatures and a longer curing time to harden. These splints are better suited for lower limb or back injuries that generally require a longer healing period.

Rehabmart is pleased to offer a variety of thermoplastic splints from such quality manufacturers as Sammons Preston and North Coast.

What are the Advantages of Thermoplastic Splints?

Thermoplastic splints are like traditional casts in that they help restrict movement of injuries and aid healing by providing support and stability to the affected area. Unlike plaster casts, thermoplastic splints generally do not completely cover the affected area and may require the use of straps or elastic to secure it to the limb or joint. Thermoplastic materials can come in sheets or pre-molded units. Heat is then applied to mold the splint to the contours of the patient’s body. Thermoplastic splints are lightweight and are available in latex-free and anti-microbial formulations. They are also available in perforated sheets to allow air to circulate around the injury.

One major advantage of thermoplastic splints is their ability to be remolded and reshaped to accommodate changes to the injured site due to tissue swelling and inflammation. Therapies that call for intermittent periods of immobility and gentle exercises of the injury are ideal for thermoplastic splints because they can be removed for physical therapy. Patients can wear the devices in the shower or they may remove them for bathing.

What Type of Thermoplastic Splint is Right for Me?

Your physician or therapist is the best person to help you decide what kind of thermoplastic splint is right for your particular situation. A number of factors can be taken into consideration such as age, skin condition, type of injury and location of the injury or fracture.

There are generally two types of thermoplastic splints: low temperature and high temperature. A low temperature thermoplastic splint can be made quickly and is usually the more economical option. They are heated in hot water and are placed directly on the patient’s skin to create a customized fit around the extremity or limb. They are usually used for injuries to the upper limbs such as thumbs, fingers, elbows and wrists.

High temperature thermoplastic splints are extremely rigid, strong and easy to clean. They are made from a mold of the patient’s body part and require high heat in the manufacturing process. High temperature thermoplastic splints are usually used for larger areas on the lower parts of the body such as the ankle, leg or back.

Whichever kind of thermoplastic splint is chosen, patients will benefit from these highly flexible, customizable, breathable and durable therapeutic devices.
